Stump grinding Mandurah

Stumps left after a tree comes down get in the way of mowers, new turf and fencing. This site is for stump grinding in Mandurah and nearby Peel suburbs — grinding the stump so you can use the ground again — not a full tree-lopping service. Send photos for a quote, or call 0485 557 649.

Stump grinding

Grinding cuts the stump below ground level so you can reclaim the space for lawn, turf, planting or fencing.

Removal vs grinding

Grinding is usually the tidy option for accessible stumps; removal may be suitable where the whole root ball must come out. Send photos and the local operator can advise the right approach.

Stump grinding in Mandurah: how it works

Stump grinding uses a dedicated machine with a rotating cutting wheel to chip the stump away below ground level. For most backyard jobs the stump is ground roughly 200–300 mm below the surface, which is deep enough to lay turf, top up with soil or plant again. The woodchip (grindings) can be left in the hole as fill or mulch, or removed for an extra charge.

  1. Send photos. One close-up of the stump with something for scale (a shoe or tape measure), and one of the path from the street to the stump.
  2. Get a quote. The operator looks at diameter, timber type and access, then gives you a price before anything is booked.
  3. Grind and tidy. The stump and main surface roots are ground down, and the area is raked over. You choose whether the grindings stay or go.

Stump removal in Mandurah: grinding vs full extraction

When people search for stump removal in Mandurah they usually want the stump gone and the ground usable. In most cases grinding is the quickest, tidiest and cheapest way to do that. Full extraction, where the stump and root ball are dug or pulled out with an excavator, is generally only needed when you are building directly over the spot, pouring a slab, or clearing roots away from pipes. Extraction costs a lot more and leaves a large hole to backfill. If you’re not sure which you need, mention your plans for the area when you send photos and the operator will advise. More detail is on our stump removal Mandurah page.

How much does stump grinding cost in Mandurah?

Every stump is quoted on its own, but published 2026 price guides for Perth and WA give a useful starting point:

Stump size (diameter)Typical WA range
Small (under 30 cm)about $150–$250
Medium (30–60 cm)about $200–$350
Large (60–120 cm)about $350–$500
Extra-large or dense hardwood$500–$900+
Palm stumpabout $85–$250
Full stump extraction (excavation)about $400–$1,200

Indicative ranges only, drawn from The Quote Yard WA price guide (2026) and Back On Tools Perth tree removal costs (2026). Many operators charge a minimum call-out, and extra stumps on the same visit are usually cheaper each. Your quote is what counts.

What pushes the price up or down:

  • Timber type: Jarrah, marri and older eucalypts are very dense and take much longer to grind than peppermint, pine or palm.
  • Access: narrow side paths, steps, steep sand banks or a gate under about 700–800 mm wide can limit which machine fits.
  • Surface roots: roots lifting paving or running under lawn add grinding time.
  • Number of stumps: the call-out cost is shared, so several stumps in one visit is better value.
  • Clean-up: leaving the grindings is cheapest; removal is usually extra.

Local to Mandurah and the Peel

Mandurah blocks come with their own quirks. Coastal suburbs like Halls Head, Falcon, Wannanup and Dawesville sit on soft sand, so roots spread wide and shallow and the machine needs firm footing. Canal-front homes often have tight side access and limestone retaining. Newer estates in Lakelands, Meadow Springs and Madora Bay tend to have small backyards with fences close to the stump, while older streets in Greenfields, Silver Sands and Erskine often have mature peppermint, paperbark and gum stumps left over from earlier removals. Further out, Pinjarra properties may have bigger jarrah or marri stumps.

Palm stumps and palm removal

Palms are common around Mandurah’s foreshore and canal homes. A palm stump is fibrous rather than woody, so it grinds differently and usually costs less than a gum stump of the same width, but the root mass can be broad. Stump grinding Mandurah FAQ

How deep is the stump ground?

Usually about 200–300 mm below ground level for turf or planting. Ask for extra depth if you plan to build or pave there.

Will the roots grow back?

Most trees won’t regrow once the stump is ground below the surface. Some species, like certain gums, can sucker from leftover roots. If that happens, the shoots can be cut or treated.

How long does it take?

A typical backyard stump takes somewhere between 30 minutes and an hour or two, depending on size, timber and access.

Can the machine fit through my side gate?

Compact stump grinders can get through quite narrow gateways. Measure the narrowest point between the street and the stump and include it with your photos.

What happens to the woodchips?

You can keep them as fill or garden mulch, or pay to have them taken away. As the chips break down they settle, so you may need to top up with soil before laying turf.

Do I need council approval?

Grinding a stump from a tree that has already been removed generally doesn’t need approval. Removing a standing tree can be different. Check with the City of Mandurah or the Shire of Murray if you’re unsure.
